Bundled Up

I've learned more about heating systems in my couple months as an Oregonian than I ever did as a Californian. It's cold up here. The outside temperature this morning was in the low 30s, which means that our furnace should kick in and take over the heavy lifting from our heat pump, which is apparently a magical heating device that acts as a heater in the summer and an AC in the summer, all done on electricity and little of it (read: cheap).

The catch is that it doesn't function efficiently when the temperature drops below 35 degrees or so. Unfortunately, our furnace is on the fritz, so we awoke to a cold house.

Hey, our house has a heat pump in the garden that was likewise promoted to us as a magical heating device. It's augmented by solar tubes on the roof, but in winter they're shaded by our neighbor's Victorian up the hill!? The system has yet to work, the heat pump just whines away 24 hours a day while we run little electric space heaters. Brrr!
